Myths and legends

.Greek mythology tells that Dionysus, the god of wine, madly desired a young nymph named Amethystos who refused his advances. Wishing to remain chaste, she sought help from the goddess Artemis who transformed her into white stone. Annoyed, Dionysus poured wine on the stone, staining it purple.
